MPj04331800000[1] "Why are many corporate health and workplace wellness programs fundamentally flawed?”

Many corporate health and workplace wellness programs are fundamentally flawed because they have a short term focus and months later you are left with a team of employees that have had little change or no impact on their workplace performance, their own health and vitality or individual productivity levels of your team members.

To effectively improve an organisations performance and productivity a culture needs to be created where the people are initially educated, motivated, assessed, and then monitored.

The more healthy, energetic and positive your team is, the greater their output at work. “On-the-job” injury prevention, overcoming general fatigue, and workplace stress reduction should all form the basis of any corporate health and workplace wellness program.

The cost to many companies from, injury, stress, fatigue, absenteeism and ‘presenteeism’, (being at work but not working to capacity) can be in the thousands to the hundreds of thousands.

Here at “Leaping Through Life” we understand and are experienced at corporate health and workplace wellness programs. During the last twelve months we have been working with teams from The Commonwealth Bank, The National Australia Bank, United Group Rail, MLC and International Arts Services to name a few…

Case Study 1: United Group Rail. In October 2010, the HSSE Coordinator, Mr Frank Henry at United Group Rail contacted Coach Cameron from “Leaping Through Life” about the possibility of discussing a proposal to reduce the amount of onsite injuries that were occurring on site. At the time the department he was responsible for, had seen a growing number of employees suffering from work place injuries and ongoing health issues. This was a real cost to the company, as United Rail is a self-insured company with hundreds of employees at their Broadmeadow depot.

It was agreed that a trial pilot program would be put in place with 60+ employees over the first six months. These employees were engaged as blue collar workers, who were responsible for building and refurbishing trains. The proposal and program included injury prevention sessions, educational workshops and individual health assessments.
From the first two assessment periods, which were only 6 weeks apart, and included the challenging period of Christmas and New Year’s, the pilot group achieved the following: – Over 58% of the group showed a drop in overall body weight and 89% improved their lean muscle mass. The group also showed a 78% improvement in flexibility and 81% improved their core stability, which is important for injury prevention. Mr Frank Henry commented early in 2010, after three months of the program, that he estimated a drop of about 80% in the amount of injuries that we being reported. This was a direct saving to United Rail Group, saving them thousands of dollars in the process.

The program continued for the next six months. All assessment results were statistically measured and directly correlated back to bottom-line performance/productivity gains.

Warm regards – Coach Cameron.
