Be committed, persistant and never fear hard work!

As a corporate coach and business owner I get to meet a lot of people from all walks of life.

One morning I could be coaching a corporate executive on how to slow down and enjoy life a little more, and by the afternoon I could be training a new staff member for one of my businesses.

The thing that really strikes you when you work with successful people, is how committed and persistant they are whilst not fearing to roll up their sleeves and do the hard yards. Any top level athlete knows this, and most CEO's know it - but sometimes the people that need to hear it don't want to listen. They then wonder why they seem to never get that job, promotion or pay rise that they think they deserve.

For example the other day I had a brand new staff member come along and go through our interview process. During the interview she complained that her current employer never gave her much responsibility and never showed her how to do much else other then point of sale and general cleaning. It so happened that in our particular business she was applying for, there was much responsibility, she was needing to open/close the business, and she had to leanr our booking system in less then 3 shifts - which is about normal. We both agreed that she could start straight away.

So after only 2 shifts, she asked if we could have a chat during which she mentioned that compaired to her last job there was too much to learn, it was a little too busy for her, and she didn't feel comfortable doing an open/close on the business. She advised me that she no longer wanted to go any further and was going back to work at her "old" job. (which was easier for her no doubt).

Many people go through their life like this person who gave up after 2 shifts. They make a decision to improve their circumstances, take the right action but then when the rubber hits the road they lack committment and persistance. They move back towards their bad habitsor their comfort zones because they are scared of a little hard work.

If you need a break through in your life then follow these simple steps to success:
1. Make a decision to change for the positive
2. Take the right action to support your decision
3. Be committed to yourself, your partner, your employer, and the teams around you.
4. Stay persistant - you need stick-a-bility. Keep doing the little things really well.
5. Never be scared of hard work. In my life and the successful people I coach, hard work comes and goes, but if you are never prepared to deal with it when it comes, you can't expect to reap the rewards anytime in the future.

Coaching yourself to success!

Coaching yourself to success and being mindful of the words you speak.

Regardless of whether I am business coaching a company director, life coaching an individual, or corporate coaching at a team building event – I see the impact of how words can determine someone’s effectiveness in life and their outcomes without them even knowing it!

The words we speak to ourselves and others can have a powerful or negative effect on the listener. It is often said that words are like weapons, they have the power to build us up or cut us down. Many times the words we say to ourselves are often unspoken and said subconsciously in our own minds. We have the authority and the right to speak to ourselves in a way which builds us up and gives us the freedom to choose our daily destiny. You can talk yourself out of anything in life, you can tell yourself you can't do it, that it is too hard, you're not smart enough, you're too old, and you’re too young, the circumstances are impossible, or all the odds are just stacked against you achieving the positive desires of your heart and the goals of your mind. The truth is - none of these things are real, it's all a matter of perspective and what you believe about yourself and your own situation.

In the sporting arena, when I was a professional sports coach, I had seen this pattern occur hundreds of times. I have witnessed athletes that have had the perfect preparation, the ideal training, the backing of the supporting team of coaches, parents and exercise physiologists - yet they were frozen into a state of being beaten within the marshalling area before the starter's gun even when off. You could see the changes in the athlete’s physiology and facial expressions, you just knew they had “talked” themselves out of the gold medal and they had already settled for second, third, fourth, or even fifth.

At other times I've seen inexperienced, raw, hungry, determined and outside rated athletes walk out of the marshalling area looking an unstoppable super hero. It didn't matter that their preparation had been hampered by injuries. It was too late to complain that they didn't get access to sports physiologists. It didn't bother them that they didn't come from a professional team with financial backing and everything else that goes with that. At that very moment - they knew what they wanted; they “talked” themselves into it. Every cell in their body was ready to win. There was no doubt in their minds, even as inexperienced as what they were - they had showed up to win big.

How do you talk to yourself on a daily basis?  What questions do you ask yourself? Do you talk down at yourself or do you build yourself up? Do you give yourself permission to win? Do you speak positive things over your own life? Do you believe that you can jump those hurdles and breakdown those barriers that have been holding you back? How you speak to yourself is up to you. Nobody can influence you more than your own subconscious mind; there is nothing more powerful than the individual that believes in him or herself. Take some time out of your busy day to design the life you deserve. Write down some positive statements that you can say about yourself, and your life. Then go about repeating these statements each day both verbally with your voice and non verbally with your mind.

Without believe in yourself nothing is possible - when you believe in yourself and you talk to yourself in a positive, empowering, and uplifting way, you will achieve more in your life than you ever thought previously possible.

Remember it all starts in your mind and the way you speak to yourself. Your words are like weapons, use them for good! For regular coaching go to www.coachcamerons.com or corporate coaching programs at www.leapingthroughlife.com.au

Why is it we struggle to find a healthy work-life balance?

Work/life balance - does it really exist?

One of the hottest topics within the corporate coaching groups and the business coaching clients that I continue to work with is always around “work/life balance”. It seems like there is a never-ending struggle or challenge to fit our busy work schedule into a busy life schedule.

Many of the challenges that my clients present include not enough time with their family, not enough time to look after their own physical and mental health, not enough time to eat well, not enough finance and not enough holidays. In many cases the work life balance is actually a myth. It is something that is unrealistic and often impossible to achieve. I like to teach people how to become more effective and efficient at the things they are already doing well whilst giving up or disregarding a lot of the time wasters that are ever present in our lives.

For example, is there any real reason why you have to have your mobile phone on 24 hours a day? Why do you continue to check your e-mails on an ongoing basis, I mean is there any real need to be in contact with so many people all at once? Will your business or your life fall over if you don't get that current e-mail message, text message or phone call? I would be making an assumption, but I assume not.

Personally I believe people need to take control of their own destiny. People need to learn how to say no. People need to stop and read every once in a while. People need to switch off their computers. People need to stop making so many casual appointments they feel pressured to get to. People need not feel like they need the newest piece of technology. Parents need not feel obligated to enrol their children in such a diverse and wide range of weekly activities. Just as a child can be overstimulated by too many toys, an adult can experience burnout from their constant busy life and all the distractions they are choosing to live with.

So what are the warning signs that you are no longer achieving a sensible “work/life balance” or what I like to call a productive work/life integration plan? Here are some tell tale signs:
You constantly wake up tired
You feel like your car’s a taxi for others
You’ve put on an unreasonable amount of body weight
You have trouble sleeping at night time
You struggle with fatigue, mentally and emotionally
You are quick to get upset at the smallest things in life
You eat too much fast food and often eat it fast
You haven't had a weekend off in the last four weeks
You haven't had a holiday in the last six months
You don't know what you want to do with your life anymore
Your dreams, desires, and goals of your youth are truly forgotten

So where to from here?

In my experience, I find one of the best ways to get out of a rut is to create some form of accountability within my life.

Many times this accountability comes in the form of a coach or a coaching program. Just think about an Olympic athlete, when they want to excel and achieve all their dreams and desires, they find a great coach and stick to the plan. They don't flip from one idea to another or change coaches every week. They work closely with the coach to find out what they want to achieve and when they want to achieve it. This is no different in your life. Most of the struggles and challenges that people and professional workers face is that they don’t know what they want, or when they want to achieve it by.

Having a clear and defined path to follow will make all the difference to how you feel and function each day. When you know what you want, you’ll know what to do, you’ll know where to spend your energy and you’ll know where to put your focus. Do you struggle with "Work/Life" balance too?

The common theme that keeps popping up during my coaching sessions with corporate executives, managers, and small to medium business owners is the "work/life balance" thing! As a corporate coach, I personally don't subscribe to "balancing" work with life  I just think it's a way for people to become more frustrated with their lives. Last week a busy professional told me she felt guilty to go and spend three times per week looking after her own health, as it took even more time away with her kids, another person in the room from the same company explained how she doesn't sleep much at night, and yet another - from the same group - confessed to never eating properly and never having the ability to wind down each day. One can only imagine what is potentially going to happen to this group if they keep going at that pace.

Rather then try to get them to "balance" more stuff in their lives - my job was simply to help them regain clarity and to be held accountable to their own objectives and outcomes.

Once we know what we want in life and when we want it, we can then set about to make it happen. Taking action is often the easy part. Taking 15mins out of the "busy-ness" of life to discover what areas you really need to improve upon is an investment of time that will pay big dividends.

If you feel like you are nearing a meltdown, have constant fatigue, never seem to get on top of your workload, have too many obligations, have health issues (mental/emotional and/or physical), and not 100% happy with the amount of time you spend with your loved ones and family, then maybe you need to get yourself a coach and find out what's important to you and when you want to get things done by! We have designed a Leaping MAP to help people get their lives and work back on track so that everything is manageable and they feel satisfied doing it. For more info www.leapingthroughlife.com.au
